Howdy junk dealers,
You were asked to identify "a famous 20th-century comedian/comic actor".
The best wrong answer was submitted by the Prieto/Werley team, who noted that the puzzle's title was " Two by Four", found the words "sawing" and "bored" (board) in the grid, and concluded that the answer must be "Wood" y Allen.
For a brief moment I thought I had put an end to Dave H.'s perfect streak of correct solutions. His initial answer was wrong - yes! But upon review the answer did (barely) meet all the criteria specified in the meta prompt, and it satisfied the intended pattern of the solution.
So in the end I had to credit Dave with an acceptable alternate solution. He also submitted the intended solution shortly thereafter.
The first thing to notice about the puzzle was the four unconventional clues leading to four answers that fit a specific pattern:
20A) Harass Hall-of-Famer Ty by flying low over his head? [BUZZ COBB]
28A) Take a wrong turn on the way to Mecca and end up in Cleveland? [MUFF HAJJ]
41A) What the commissioner of Hazzard County might let loose when those Duke boys inevitably get the best of him again? [HOGG YELL]
49A) Tell writer/director Whedon that his films suck, perhaps? [GALL JOSS]
So we have four two-word phrases with four letters each, as per the title. Furthermore, each word in each pair follows the vowel/consonant pattern CVCC. So, we were looking for a person whose full name followed the pattern CVCC CVCC.
If you are of a certain age this might immediately bring to mind REDD FOXX, the meta answer. It was my hope that in particular the uncommon double "j" of "hajj" would bring to mind the double "x" of "Foxx". If not, it was still possible to find the answer by scanning a list of famous comedians.
BILL BURR was also accepted as an alternate answer, and there may be others who would have fit the criteria.
