Howdy travelers,
As I predicted, we did indeed beat the record number of solvers this week - six people submitted correct solutions, doubling our previous high.
You were asked to identify "a hit song from 1971". How did the successful solvers achieve this?
Six answers self-identified as meta clues, with no other identifying information. These had to be solved using the crossing entries in the grid:
47D) Meta clue 1a - ROSE LEE
26D) Meta clue 1b - MOTH
35D) Meta clue 2a - HOBO
5A) Meta clue 2b - HUSSY
53A) Meta clue 3a - OF HEARTS
24A) Meta clue 3b - TO CATCH A
Each numbered pair of clues suggests a word:
ROSE LEE and MOTH - Gypsies
HOBO and HUSSY - Tramps
_____ OF HEARTS and TO CATCH A _____ - Thieves
So the meta answer could only be Cher's "Gypsys [sic], Tramps and Thieves". The title "Share and Share Alike" was just a simple pun on the singer's name.
